Caledonian Torbay Hotel March 2024
The hotel was almost right opposite the theatre which we were visiting & there were plenty of restaurants & shops nearby. The staff were friendly & helpful. The beds were comfortable & the bedding was clean. More tea/coffee supplies for our rooms were easily obtained via reception. There was plenty of seating in the reception, lounge, bar area & ballroom. There was a lift (although there was quite a wait at busy times) We loved the bingo!
No parking onsite & difficult to drop off people & baggage. (Parking was available in the multi-storey car park round the corner from the hotel but not ideal if you are elderly or have mobility issues). The decor & overall appearance needs updating - the paintwork was flaking (especially round the windows in our rooms where it was black with mould). The bathrooms in our rooms need updating, the soap dispensers by the shower & sink were empty (no toiletries were supplied) The bar was swamped on both the Friday & Saturday nights & there was quite a queue - although the 2 bar staff did their best to serve everyone in a timely fashion. There was no other choice of egg for breakfast other than scrambled (and it was a bit bland). Room 422 had a very strange odour (almost like a faint smell of sewage - but it wasn't from the bathroom & the window wasn't open) It was more evident each time you entered the room. The toilet facilities on the ground floor could do with updating. (There was an issue with the 'plumbing' as when one toilet was flushed the neighbouring toilet nearly overflowed & a lot of 'gurgling' followed). I would like to add that none of the above detracted from our stay at the hotel which we enjoyed.

Very Good
Comfortable clean room. Larger than I expected. A little tired, with small stains on walls and carpet, but extremely well daily cleaned.
Location a little noisy, right by the main road, but not the hotel's fault and I slept well with the window closed.

Great value stay
Huge room with good views. Bed very comfortable. Room and bathroom clean and well equipped. Hairdryer and iron supplied. Buffet breakfast had lots of choices. Staff very good. Entertainment in ballroom. Plenty of seating in public areas. Amazing value!.
Creaky floors in room. Fire alarm at 07.30! Sometimes queue for lift.
